Carbon Composite with Axial Pressure Ports 

RSS model 05CH-11MK2M:  Core holder with multiple axial pressure ports designed for good X-ray transparency.

The design is compact and adopted for good X-ray transparency. The RSS composite coreholder is custom made and individually adapted to fit requested specifications. Following information gives an example for one of our versions.

Standard bi-axial

RSS model: 05CH-03STD38

This coreholder is designed for general versatile use, and is prepared for reservoir conditions, and optionally also as X-ray transparent. A handy core mounting fixture is available, and makes this core-holder to be a good choice in test programs with several core samples in parallel, such as a porous plate PcRi program. Design and documentation in accordance with PED 2014/68/EU.

Quick Load - Hassler Type

RSS Model: 05CH-02QL38

The RSS quick load coreholder is based on the Hassler principle, with an adjustable axial piston and a quick connect loading port. Radial pressure is either supplied by nitrogen gas or hydraulic fluid. The coreholder is supplied with a bench top stand, also suitable for vertical mounting. 

Quick Load - Bi-Axial

RSS Model: 05CH-22QLA38

The RSS bi-axial quick load core-holder is with a separate axial hydraulic piston ensuring same overburden pressure both axially and radially. Overburden pressure is either supplied by nitrogen gas or hydraulic fluid.

The core-holder is equipped with a quick connect lock enabling quick and easy swapping of core samples. A push rod makes unloading of samples easier. Difference in the length of the samples is adjustable, and covers any length up to 100mm. The core-holder is supplied with a bench top stand, also suitable for vertical mounting.

Bi-Axial Core Holder 1.5" Endcap One Side

Compact design and adopted for optimum X-ray transparency.  Inlet and outlet are arranged in one end, making mounting of sample easier, and unit is easier to handle in the scanner gantry. The RSS CT/PET core holder is normally custom made and individually adapted to fit requested specifications. Above illustration is an example taken from one of our existing designs. Design and documentation is in accordance with PED 2014/68/EU.

The design is compact and adopted for good X-ray transparency. For better transparency thin-walled versions also available (with lower pressure rating). The RSS aluminum coreholder is custom made and individually adapted to fit requested specifications. Following information gives an example for one of our versions. Design and documentation in accordance with PED 2014/68/EU.

  • Core sample Ø1”, length 100mm, Bi-axial overburden, floating end piece.

  • A variety of end pieces, single or dual flow lines, and a separate line for differential pressure.

  • Heating jacket, 30-100°C

  • End piece in a variety of material, normally PEEK for full X-ray transparency.

  • Electrical insulated floating piston: Yes

  • 1/8” or 1/16” flow lines (dependent of needed flexibility, due to the CT rotating stage)

  • Main body aluminum, optionally composite for higher pressure/better transparency

  • Sturdy fixture adapted for the CT stage MAWP 7000 psi ( optional design available)

Micro Core Holder - Hassler Type

The RSS micro coreholder is custom made and individually adapted to fit requested specifications. Following information describes on one of our versions, made for a micro-CT scanner. Optional X-ray transparent materials: aluminum, PEEK, carbon fiber, beryllium.

  • Material process wetting parts: natural PEEK

  • Port configuration: 10-32 Upchurch coned, 1/16-inch tubing Core size, Ø10mm

The coreholder comes with three inlet and three outlet ports plus overburden port both ends. Different flow paths can be arranged for the individual end platen, three inlets give flexibility. Individually end platens for e.g. two fluid inlet and differential pressure or a groove for particle buildup (filtrate). 

Micro Core Holder - Bi-Axial, endcap one side

RSS model: 05CH-08MiC micro compact

RS Systems provide a wide range of standard and tailor-built coreholders. However, most X-ray transparent coreholders are tailor built to meet specific criteria. This is critical for optimizing versus a micro-CT, with restrictions in available space and the need of low attenuation materials.

The shown sketch below describes one of our base designs. Inlet, outlet, and overburden ports are in the bottom body, ensuring easy mounting and with minimum conflict versus the X-ray scanner. Options, double inlet or outlet lines, and flow ports in the top of the core holder. 

Typical issues to check before ordering:

  • Scanner vs core holder body geometry conflicts

  • Coreholder fixture adaptor for specific CT stage

  • Core diameter/length and start position above core holder bottom

  • Flow lines, 1/32” or 1/16”, port type and configuration

  • Temperature and pressure specifications

  • Body material PEEK natural or fiber reinforced

  • Maximum wall thickness, other special needs

  • Rubber sleeve material, Viton or other

A standard delivery will include pressure test certificates and material certificates for each specific core holder.
